    Early American Flags: Gadsden Flag
This flag is named after Colonel Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina. Colonel Gadsden saw a similar flag, copied it and submitted the design to the Provincial Congress in South Carolina. Commodore Esek Hopkins of Rhode Island, first Commander-in-chief of the Continental Fleet, carried a similar flag in early 1776, when his ships put to sea for the first time. The inscription represented a warning by the colonists to the British.

Early American Flags: First Navy Jack
One of the first flags flown by our Navy, believed to have flown aboard the flagship of the newly commissioned Continental fleet, in January, 1776. This flag features thirteen red and white stripes, along with the rattlesnake and "Don't tread on me" slogan, both of which were becoming powerful symbols for the early colonists, indicating their courage and fierce desire for independence.
Sep 11, 2002 The U.S. Navy is ordering its fleet to fly this "Don't Tread on Me" flag aboard all its vessels. Navy Secretary Gordon England says this flag "represents an historic reminder of the nation's and Navy's origin and will to persevere and triumph."

    Early American Flags: Culpeper Minutemen
The Culpeper Minutemen of Colonial America added their slogan "Liberty or Death" to a stylized version of the original "Don't Tread On Me" Flag. The rattle snake had become a traditional symbol of the American Colonies.
