Green Flag of Ireland
In Ireland of the 1790's a republican movement emerged, known as
The Society of United Irishmen. This group used a gold harp on a green field
as their flag (called the 'Green Flag'). The flag was
carried in the rebellions of 1798 and 1803 and it achieved popular
acceptance as a national flag. The flag was used during the widespread
peaceful agitations for 'Repeal' of the act of union in the 1830s and 1840s
but was viewed as a seditious emblem by the British authorities.
The revolutionary movement of the 1860's, the Irish Republican Brotherhood (or
'Fenians') also used the Green Flag. And the flag was used
by all the nationalist politicians who campaigned for 'Home
Rule' (devolved government within the United Kingdom). By about 1880 the
Green Flag was generally tolerated, but it was never given any official status
and was always seen as a nationalist emblem.
The variation of the flag that we offer includes the phrase "Erin Go
Bragh", which means "Ireland Forever".

Flag of Northern Ireland
The Northen Ireland flag consists of an upright red cross on a white field,
with a hand inside a six-pointed star, topped with a crown.
The red hand of Ulster comes from a legend from one of Ireland's many
invasions. The leader of a war party promised a prize to the first
man to touch land with his right hand; so the winner, a left-handed man, cut
off his right hand and threw it onto the shore. The six-pointed star represents
the six counties of Ulster that make up Northern Ireland (other Ulster counties
are in the Republic).
The Northern Ireland flag was introduced in 1953 but it is a banner of arms
which had been used by the government of Northern Ireland since 1925. This was
a civil flag for Northern Ireland, but this status was abolished when
the Belfast Stormont assembly was closed down in 1973. Thereafter, the Union
Flag was made official for all purposes in Northern Ireland.

St Patrick's Cross
The origin of the St Patrick's Cross has been traced to the establishment of the Knights of Saint Patrick in 1783, when the red saltire on white was part of the Order's regalia. There are several theories as to why the Knights of Saint Patrick choose the red saltire as part of the regalia, but no real evidence to fully support any of them.

Ulster Province Flag
The Flag of Ulster is a historic banner used to represent Ulster, one of the four provinces of Ireland. It is still used today to represent the province at some sporting events and formed the basis of the Ulster Banner, the flag of the Government of Northern Ireland between 1953 and 1972. The Red Hand of Ulster is a symbol derived from the O'Neill dynasty who were historic monarchs of the provincial kingdom, while the gold background featuring a red cross comes from the coat of arms of the Burkes, a Hiberno-Norman noble family.
